A Professor, Godfrey Iyalomhe has disclosed the need for mass mobilization against the prevalence of drug misuse in Nigerian universities and the country as a whole.

Iyalomhe revealed the need while delivering lecture on the theme, “Drug: misuse, resistance and consequences” at the 9th annual conference of faculty of basic medical sciences of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state.

Describing drug misuse as a global public health challenge said its unfavorable effects on users cannot be overemphasized.

The guest speaker listed such adverse effects to include which include threat to health, mental, social, psychological and economic fabrics of the nation.

He expressed how saddening it is that adolescents and young adults are are those largely engaging in drug misuse especially cannabis, cocaine and alcohol.

Iyalomhe expressed the crucial need to reinforce protective factors against the menace.

He therefore called on the international community, governments, religious bodies, NGOs and healthcare professionals to take up the challenge.
