Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Executive Secretary National Universities Commission (NUC) has stressed the need for all university managements to have accurate and reliable data on all of the institutions system.

Rasheed said this during a meeting of the NUC with Directors of Academic Planning of Nigerian Universities in Abuja on Thursday.

He said accurate and reliable data in the Nation’s private and public university system would help in efforts to achieve an effective planning in the country.

Rasheed decried the current situation where lack of proper and adequate data has led to lack of proper basis for planning in the ivory towers.

`It is sad that we do not have accurate data in our universities; what are we doing, how can we plan if we do not have accurate data.

“I want a situation that wherever you are, you have the data of how many students are in your university, how many males and females; how many students in a faculty, how many in a department.

“Also, how many full time and part time students; how many masters and PhD students; how many lecturers and staff; the ratio of male and female in a department and faculty, how many foreign students.

“If we do not have all this data with all the necessary variables, we would not be taken seriously both at home and abroad.’’

He said what he hoped for during the meeting was that open and frank discussions would be held on the best way to generate reliable data.

He said with accurate data emanating from universities, the commission would be able to contribute meaningfully in government policy formulation and implementations.

Rasheed urged the participants to work out formula for providing the commission with verifiable and reliable data and also to sensitise their various university communities on the activities of the commission.

He also warned the participants against the activities of fraudulent persons posing as staff of the commission to defraud the unsuspecting institutions.

“Any form of request from anybody asking you to pay money into any account, that is not a remita to CBN account, please the person is a fraudster.

“The commission would not ask universities to pay money into any other account but the remita to CBN account and if you are still in doubt ask questions.”(NAN)
