Senator Wamakko Releases 34 Inmates From Prison

The Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, Alh. (Dr) Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Sarkin Yamman Sokoto, in a bid to ameliorate the suffering of the people in this month of Ramadan and fast tract majors aimed at decongesting the prison and contribute his quota in the smooth administration of justice in Sokoto State has today secured the freedom of 34 inmates who are serving jail term in the Sokoto central prison and in Tambuwal, Bissalam, Wurno and Gwadabawa satellite prisons by paying the fines and compensation levied against them by the courts. Similarly, the Senator also settled the debt owed by some inmates by paying the debt for them.
This development was made available to newsmen by the Aliyu Magatakarda free legal Services Foundation (AMWA free legal services foundation) in a press release signed by the secretary of the foundation, Barrister Abdulhamid Zubairu.
According to him, the former Governor and the Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District released the sum of 4 Million Naira for the exercise stating that 34 inmates were freed by settling their fines, compensation and/or debt. Similarly, the senator gave the freed inmates the sum of N20, 000.00 each for transport back to their respective destination and as assistance to cushion their immediate needs.
Addressing the released inmates, Senator Wamakko who was represented by Barrister Bashiru Mu’azu Jodi advised the released inmates to be of good behaviours and see their detention as an act ordained by Almighty Allah.
The inmates who benefited from the exercise showed their joy and happiness for this gesture and further expressed their appreciation to Senator Alh (Dr) Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sarkin Yamman Sokoto) and promised to shun away from all sorts of social vices that might bring them back to prison and also keep to their financial obligation.
This exercise was carried out by the foundation to meet the cardinal principles and objectives of assisting the less privilege and indigent litigants who are languishing in prison custody. The foundation also represents some inmates in court, who are in dire need of legal representation absence of which have kept them in prison custody.
While answering question from the journalist, the secretary of the Foundation, Barrister Abdulhamid Zubairu said this exercise will be carried out in every month of Ramadan.
This was made known in a mini ceremony held at NBA secretariat, Sokoto state branch which featured respective dignitaries including the Secretary NBA Sokoto branch, journalists, securities personnel among others.
