A group, Federation of Youths Soccer Clubs (FEYSOC), has urged state governments in South-East and South-South to develop grassroots football to groom young football players.
The Organising Secretary of FEYSOC, Anistar Izuikem, made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Enugu.
Izuikem noted that there was need for the state governments to harness and nurture the abundant football talents in the zones to stardom and fame.
He noted that development of grassroots football programme would also help to check youths’ restiveness.
“When states governments within the zones invest and give needed attention to grassroots football development; it will help to motivate youths towards pursuing their careers in football.
“These little kids and boys you see in the two zones have potentials to be the next generation of big names in the football world.
“I have understudied some of these kids and boys within the zones and found out that they are resilient and passionate on their ambition to be football greats.
“But, they need support and encouragement, especially financially to get the needed focus to push ahead their passion and ambition,’’ he said.
Izuikem urged governors in the zones to deliberately sponsor football competitions that would keep the boys busy; while helping to bring out their football talents and expose them further. (NAN)
