A 48-year-old man, Gabriel Olusegun, who allegedly defrauded two people of N170,000 on the pretext of procuring self-contained apartments for them, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Olusegun, who resides at Agege Area of Lagos, is facing a six-count charge bordering on stealing, obtaining under false pretence and conspiracy.
The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, said the accused committed the offences with some others still at large on Jan. 17 at No 4, Arubo St., Oko-0ba, Agege, Lagos.
According to him, the accused collected N70, 000 from one Nofiu Mayegun and N100, 000 from Oliver Nadia as deposits for the apartments.
“The accused collected the money and failed to get them the apartments as he promised. He converted the money to his personal use.
“All efforts made by the complainants to get back their money proved abortive,’’ he said.
The offences, he said, contravene Sections 287, 168 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three-year imprisonment for stealing while Section 314 stipulates a 15-year jail term for obtaining by false pretences. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs G. O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum. She said the sureties should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
Anifowoshe adjourned the case till March 7 for mention.
