A 35-year-old jobless man, Godwin Joseph, who allegedly stole two laptops valued at N300,000, was on Thursday brought before a Barnawa Customary Court in Kaduna.
The accused, who resides at No. 55, Hausawa St. Television in Kaduna, is facing a charge of stealing.
Police Prosecutor Zaradeen Umar told the court that the complainant, Mr Samuel Ekpenyong of NITEL Quarters, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, reported the case at Television Police Station on March 30.
According to Insp. Umar, the accused broke into the room of the complainant on March 30 at 9.30 a.m. while he was at work.
“The defendant entered the complainant’s room through the window and stole two of his laptops valued at N300, 000 which he was charging.
“But when the defendant was about to run out of the room, he was seen by a neighbour who alerted others and he was immediately arrested,’’ he said.
The offence contravened Section 271 of the Penal Code of Kaduna 2017. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The judge, Mr Dauda John, granted bail to him in the sum of N100, 000 with a surety in
like sum. John said he surety must provide evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government as part of the bail conditions.
Further hearing has been adjourned until May 30.
